Electrical System

Although I liked the idea of the electrical panel that came with our boat, it was poorly layed out and no more could be added to it. In fact, a number of the busses were now being shared. It was definately time to start fresh.

I picked up another buss bar which I used as a common ground. I set up the existing bar as hot and seperated 2 of the busses from the other 10. These 2 were always hot while the remaining were switched. This would allow for all power on the boat to be shut down from the flick of a single switch, while at the same time allowing the memory for the clock to be kept alive. A volt meter was put inline for battery testing and also a small fuse panel for those items that did not have a fuse wired inline.

I was quite happy with the results and pleased there was still room to grow without making a wiring mess!

Electrical Panel Update (2009)

After 2 years we were in need of an electrical panel upgrade. It's funny how you can never have enough power... and of course that means more wires!

Electrical Panel Update (2020)

Although the previous panel update worked well for many years, when I recently tried to make a small upgrade to some equipment I realized I no longer knew where each wire went... I did not label the wires!
Deciding another panel update was in order, this time all wires would be properly labeled and all connections would be fused with the ability to show what fuses are tripped.
The wiring may not look any cleaner but I can now see where everything goes and have the ability to easily expand in the future.

Electrical Panel Update (2021)

This year I moved the main switch to inside the cabin, along with an amp meter to monitor the power I was pulling from the battery along with what was going in from the solar panel.  I rearranged the breaker panels and upgraded the bus bars.

I also put in a separate panel which holds the main breakers for the battery bank and an AC charger for when the boat is plugged into shore power.  This is the first time the battery bank has had a main breaker and proper sized wire on all the circuits.
