Summer 2007 - Come Sail Away

2007-06-21

Whoopeee!!! It's the first day of summer and I was fortunate enough to grab a friend and head out on the lake. Actually it was more work related, using the boat and shoreline as a backdrop for a television spot. Even though the wind seemed to vanish once we got out there, it was still good to take a quick break from "normal every day life".

This weekend it was actually my wife's idea to go for a family sail. The plan was to sail down to a friends camp Saturday and spend the night before returning Sunday afternoon. We departed under overcast skies with a wind giving us 3 to 4 knots. After 3 hours of sailing the wind suddenly died and there was hardly a ripple in the water. We motored the rest of the way and finished off the afternoon with swimming, tubing and hunting for crayfish. A late BBQ supper followed and the evening ended with toasting marshmallows over an open fire. A cool evening breeze lightly blew through the cabin as we snuggled into our bunks for the night.

Important note to remember for next time... don't spend the night on a sailboat while tied to a dock! The lite squeak of a bumper rubbing against the hull sounds like thunder reverberating down below making it hard for a good night sleep. Regardless, we had a great breakfast and then it was time to play. More swimming, tubing and crayfish hunting for the kids along with a short sailboat ride in the bay. By 1pm we had finished lunch and it was time to say our goodbyes and head off. The wind was strong and gave us a steady 4.5 to 5.5 knots all the way home.
