TILLER PILOT - LOOK MA, NO HANDS

As much as I love sailing, my wife and kids do not always share the same enthusiasm... especially when the temperature drops below 15 celcius.

I needed to come up with a way to rig the boat so I could sail single handed and still enjoy what was left of the season. I priced out hardware to bring all the lines to the cockpit and also noted the number of new holes I would need to drill into the cabin roof. Then I stumbled across a cool electronic device called a Tiller Pilot. This device would allow me to raise and lower the sails while it took control of the tiller and kept a perfect course. At the same time, I would only need to drill a few holes into the side rail.

Not only would this device allow me to sail single handed, it could take over during those long boring stretches when you would much rather be looking at the scenery... or looking for some food to munch on.

When "Tilly" arrived, I headed straight for the dock to do some measuring. Unfortunately "Tilly" needed an extra 5 inches to reach from the tiller to the side rail. This ment ordering the 5 inch extension from RayMarine and waiting another 2 weeks for it to arrive.

Once the extension came in, it was simply a matter of drilling a couple of holes and running some wires. The Tiller Pilot works perfectly and I am quite pleased with this purchase.

The only downside of sailing alone is that "Tilly" doesn't have a whole lot to talk about.
